Questions and answers

Getting set up, what happens to your workouts, and how JustRow works with Apple Health, your Concept2 logbook and Strava.

Quick setup

What do I need?

How do I connect to my RowErg?

  1. Wake the monitor by pressing any button or pulling the handle.
  2. On the PM5's main menu, choose Connect.
  3. Open JustRow and choose your monitor from the list.

In a gym with several ergs, the monitor with the strongest signal is usually the one in front of you.

Do I have to connect every time?

No. JustRow remembers your RowErg and reconnects by itself the next time the monitor wakes up.

How do I start a workout?

Just start rowing. JustRow begins recording when the flywheel turns and saves the workout when you finish, whether you stop on the monitor or in the app.

To row a set piece, choose a distance or a time on the Row screen. JustRow sets it up on the monitor for you.

Can I lock my phone or put it in my pocket?

Yes. A workout keeps recording with the phone locked or in the background.

Will JustRow drain my monitor's batteries?

It tries hard not to. When you are not rowing, JustRow lets go of the monitor: two minutes after you leave the app, or after fifteen minutes on screen with nobody on the erg. Then the PM5 can go to sleep as normal.

How does JustRow get my heart rate?

From an Apple Watch with JustRow installed, or from a heart-rate belt that is paired to the PM5. If both are there, the watch wins.

When you start rowing, JustRow opens a workout on your watch so your heart rate is read every second. If the watch shows the workout but no heart rate appears straight away, raise your wrist and open JustRow on the watch once. Apple only lets a watch app start reading heart rate while it is on screen.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no JustRow account and no JustRow server. Your workouts are kept on your iPhone and in your own iCloud. Concept2 and Strava are optional, and only if you connect them.

How much does it cost?

Recording, saving, Apple Health, the Concept2 logbook, Strava and your full history are free.

Your workouts

Can I lose a workout?

That is the one thing JustRow is built to prevent. Each workout is saved on your phone the moment it ends, before anything is sent anywhere. If your signal drops, your Concept2 sign-in expires or Bluetooth hiccups, the workout is still saved, and JustRow sends it on when it can.

Will my workouts come with me to a new phone?

Yes, if you are signed in to iCloud. Your workouts sync to your own private iCloud storage, which only you can see, so they appear on your new phone without restoring a backup. You will need to sign in to Concept2 and Strava again on the new phone.

What happens when I delete a workout?

It is removed from JustRow on all your devices, from Apple Health and from your Concept2 logbook. Strava does not let apps delete activities, so if the workout is on Strava, JustRow says so and you delete it there yourself.

Apple Health

What does JustRow save to Apple Health?

Each row is saved as an Indoor Rowing workout, with its distance, active and resting energy, and heart rate. It appears in the Fitness app and counts towards your Move ring like any other workout.

My workout is in Health but shows no calories. Why?

Health lets you allow each type of data separately, and Active Energy is sometimes left off. On your iPhone, go to Settings › Apps › Health › Data Access & Devices › JustRow and turn on everything JustRow asks to write.

Will my heart rate appear twice?

No. When your heart rate comes from your Apple Watch, the watch has already saved it to Health, and JustRow does not write it again.

Can I turn off saving to Health?

Yes, in JustRow › Settings › Apple Health. You can also withdraw permission at any time in the Health app, and remove anything JustRow has written there.

Concept2 logbook

Do I need a Concept2 account?

Only if you want your workouts in your Concept2 logbook. Everything else works without one.

How do I connect my logbook?

Go to Settings › Concept2 logbook › Sign in to Concept2 and sign in on Concept2's own page. JustRow never sees your password.

Do workouts upload automatically?

Yes, once you are signed in. You can turn Upload workouts automatically off in the same screen and send workouts one at a time instead.

What are weight class and "Who can see results"?

They are your logbook settings, and JustRow sends them with each workout. Your weight class decides which rankings a result counts towards, and "Who can see results" sets its privacy on the logbook. Set both in Settings › Concept2 logbook.

I also use ErgData or a USB stick. Will workouts be logged twice?

No. If the logbook already has a workout with the same date, time and distance, it recognises it, and JustRow marks it as synced without adding a second copy.

If I delete a workout in JustRow, does it leave the logbook?

Yes. Deleting a workout in JustRow removes it from your logbook as well.

Strava

How do I connect Strava?

Go to Settings › Strava and tap Connect with Strava. Approve JustRow on Strava's page. Leave Upload your activities ticked, as that is the only permission JustRow asks for. JustRow never sees your Strava password.

What does JustRow send to Strava?

Each workout, as an activity titled Indoor Row and filed under Virtual Rowing, which is Strava's category for rowing machines. It includes distance, time, pace, stroke rate, power and heart rate, with one lap per split. No description, notes or summary are added.

Can I send my older workouts?

Yes. When you first connect, JustRow asks whether to send the workouts you recorded before. They go oldest first, one at a time, and will appear in your followers' feeds. If you say no, only new rows are sent.

Can I choose which workouts go to Strava?

Turn off Send workouts automatically in Settings › Strava. New rows then wait until you open one and tap Sync on its Strava line.

My rows appear twice on Strava. Why?

Your Concept2 logbook can send workouts to Strava as well. If both are connected, each row arrives once from JustRow and once from the logbook. Turn off one of them, either in JustRow or under Applications in your Concept2 logbook.

If I delete a workout in JustRow, does it leave Strava?

No. Strava does not let apps delete activities. JustRow tells you when a workout you are deleting is on Strava, so you can delete it in Strava yourself.

I deleted an activity on Strava. How do I send it again?

Open the workout in JustRow and tap Sync on its Strava line. To resend several, delete them on Strava and use Settings › Strava › Sync all again. Only the ones missing from Strava are sent.

How do I disconnect?

Tap Disconnect in Settings › Strava. This also removes JustRow from your connected apps on Strava. Activities already on Strava stay there.

Still stuck?

Email support@go-justrow.app. If something went wrong with a workout, include its date, and what the monitor showed if you remember.
